Cisco SMARTnet is a maintenance contract to cover Cisco hardware and software. It is supplied by Cisco, but generally sold by Cisco Authorized Reseller. Generally, contract duration is one year, but Cisco will provide discounts for longer contracts.
Most Cisco devices running Cisco IOS operating system, which is constantly updated and improved, there are only two ways (legal) for updates to the IOS software, it is to buy each once it changes, the second is to take a SMARTnet contract for your product and download all updates for what they are released.
